Gary Holand,
like many Others,doesn't like Dentists.
"They poke you until it hurts,
"he says, "and their tools-teasing needles, picks, pliers and all ---are
scary."
At least that's how this Southampton under-14 Coach felt before his
first and recent holiday in Bangkok.
Gary accompa-nied his wife Diana, Bangkok regular, on a visit to her
favourite dentist, Dr Lily Porncharoen.

DR. LILY...
More than 15 years ago,a middle aged Norwegian
tourist, Einar Arnesen, walked into a Ramkhamhaeng clinic in Bangkok for
a dental Visit.
Einar , who held from Syvde, a little town near the north sea learned
about Dr. Watchareewon 'Lily 'Porncharoen's practice from a Norwegian
news paper.
Happy with the dental job, he came back every year for the next ten
years for his regular dental checkup. They became good friends that
along with dental visits, they would exchange family news through the
mail.
At one time, when Dr. lily was in Europe for a holiday with some
friends, Einar invited her to come over, offering her free tickets to
picturesque Syvde plus cabin.

 And
he could not believe it for the first time in his life. He fell asleep
while the dentist drilled his teeth.
Novocaine had nothing to do with it. The relaxing effect came from the
foot massage, the soft music and the soothing herbal scent in the room.
"It was fantastic." Gary says of his two hour visit at Dr. Lily's
dental office. "It didn't smell of antiseptics unlike other clinics. It
only had the pleasant smell of herbs"
Gary says that if not for the dental tools in his mouth, "I would
have thought I was in spa."
Actually , he was in a spa - or, to be precise, in a precursor to dental
spa.
In early April, Dr. Lily will open in Bangkok Asia's first dental spa, a
new concept meant to make the often dreaded dental visit downright
pleasurable. The soon to open Bangkok Dental spa , located just behind
the Robinson's shopping complex in the Asoke area along Sukhumvit road,
will have the amenities of five star day spa scented lounge , cushioned
treatment tables , indoor waterfalls , piped-in music, among other
things -and offer perks like body massage and foot reflexology before,
during or after every dental service.

THE BEGINNING
Although Bangkok Dental Spa is weeks away from opening day. Gary Holland
Got his dental Spa Experience at Dr. Lily's Ramkhamhaeng Clinic, where
the concept has been under going testing and fine tuning.
The whole idea started from one foreign patient who under went a
complicated Dental make over. After more than an hour of opening his
mouth, He got a little edgy and complained of strained jaw. "So I gave
him a massage in the face neck and shoulders, it had a calming effect on
him", Dr Lily Says.
And it hit upon her: why not a dental clinic with free massage? while
planning for the Bangkok dental spa, She tried the concept on her
Ramkhamhaeng Clinic and all her patients, especially those from abroad,
found the free foot or body massage and the aroma therapy a welcome
respite from an otherwise stressful session.
A HIT IN THE US
But Dr lily isn't grabbing credit for a concept that's been catching
fire in the US. The Dental spa, she admits, first appear in California
accommodation with a splendid view of a crystal clear lake.
It was a wonderful trip, with Einar, his pretty daughters and their
neighbors hosting a barbecue and other out door activities for the
visiting Thai Dentist.
Then just as Dr. Lily was pre occupied , with the birth of a daughter
and the financial crunch brought about by the 1997 Asian currency crisis
, Einar's letters and dental visit stopped. Thinking he was just busy
with other things she occasionally send him cards to say hello. No
reply.
When Dr. Lily had her first website, she sought him out for some
comments. it was only then she got the shocker-Einar had died years ago.
She burst into tears.
To her peers and other people, Dr. Lily is a respected practitioner , a
specialist in Prosthodental treatment and cosmetic dentistry. But to her
patients, she is both a dentist and a friend- as Einar and many other
patients from Europe , The US , Australia , Japan and other countries
have happily found out.
Glib - tongued and bubbling, she doesn't fit the traditional profile of
a dentist, which is that of a serious looking women with knitted
eyebrows and hard to a get smile. A graduate in dental surgery from the
prestigious Chulalongkorn University, she started her Dental practice in
1987.Through the years she built up a reputation of professionalism and
dental excellence , becoming a TV resource person on dental health and
guest lecturer at her almamater in the process.
Her new Bangkok dental spa, scheduled to open in early march, is simply
a manifestation of her philosophy - quality dental work with so much
human touch. In may 2002, Dr. Lynn Watanabe set up in Los Angeles what
she simply called dental spa, where full fledge dentistry comes with a
variety of treatment and perks more typically associated with day spas.
Even the most stoic among us, Dr. Lily says, is likely to feel a bit
anxious during a visit to a dentist. The antiseptic smell ,glaring
lights and the whirring Dental drill are enough to quicken anyone's
pulse.
Fear has kept many people from visiting the dentist regularly.
To combat that fear, more and more dentist in the US are pampering their
patients with all sorts of things- waiting rooms with an ambiance of an
upscale resort, massages, facials, manicures, moodscape music playing
softly in the background, a dental chair with self programmable heated
massage, head phones to listen to a favorite music channel, video
goggles etc.
Call them outlandish but these things have a positive effect on
patients. Dr Lily says that "when a person is scared his blood
pressure rises and his body produces more adrenalin". This makes the
anesthetic go through the system more quickly, rendering it less
effective.
A scared patient, she adds, is often tense and edgy. "And edgy
patients are hard to work with. Quality of service sometimes suffers as
a result."
So if u think it's weird to have a massage while having your teeth done,
think again. Studies have shown , according to Dr lily that Massage
releases endorphins that help lower blood pressure. And lower blood
pressure means a relaxed patients.
Comfort aside, massage and other amenities can contribute to oral
health.
A big number of people don't visit a dentist twice a year ,as
recommended.
Money is one explanation, but many people just recoil with fear at the
thought of someone poking and drilling in their mouths.
In her own small way, Dr. Lily wishes to changes peoples' perception
about dentistry. Bangkok dental spa, she says, will be a far cry from a
traditional dental clinic. "And it will be something you have never seen
in Thailand - or even in Asia". Outdated dog - eared magazines - a
mainstay in the waiting room of many dental practices - will be a thing
of the past. Free tea, coffee ,freshly baked cookies and Internet access
will be offered instead in the spacious, pastel- hued reception area.
The whole ambiance will be that of a five star spa, complete with the
rippling sound of a brook and the swift aroma of lavender and lemon
grass. Skill therapists will be on hand to give you various choices of
revitalizing massage - like the Hawaiian Lomi- Lomi, Swedish Balinese,
Asian Blend (a tender soothing variation of Thai massage), including
foot reflexology and other luxurious no body would have dreamed of in
the traditional Dental office.
It will have separate spa treatment room, luxuriously furnished , with
two towel- covered Beds for full body massage sessions.
Of course, it will have nice dental room five of them actually -
completed with the latest in dental gadgetry.
Dr Lily is leaving no stone unturned - and saving accounts untouched -
to make your dental visit more like a part of your holiday rather than
and unpalatable break in your Thailand itinerary. The whole place is
almost 300sq meters big - enough to accommodate at least 15 modest
dental rooms.

At the dental spa, patients will be pampered with all sorts of

But Dr. Lily would have only 5 dental rooms for her dental spa to make
sure there will be enough space for a lot of other amenities.
Yet, inspite of these grand perks, she is quick to point out that high
quality dental service which has been the hallmark of her long and
successful dental career is still the most important thing .
"Bangkok Dental will always be about excellent dentistry. The spa
amenities are great, but they won't bring foreign patients back if the
quality care isn't there," says, Dr Lily ,who counts hundreds of
people from Europe , the United States, Japan, Australia and other
countries among her regular patients.
The dental spa, She adds ,will have more than 20 dental specialists,
particularly in Cosmetic Dentistry and Implants, specializations that
have made Dr. Lily and her team famous here and abroad.
All these years, has been known not only for her dental skills as an
express dentist. Aware that most of her foreign patients come here also
to spend a holidays, she does things as quickly as possible- without
compromising quality .
A major dental job that would normally take weeks abroad would only take
3-4 hours With her, not including a day or two of lab work, of course,
with such express service, a patient get enough time for sight seeing
and shopping.
Dr Lily's folksy brand of practice - fast but quality dentistry , with
her trade mark friendliness and lavish pampering - will also be the hall
